We are deeply grateful for the trust and support you’ve shown in this election. On behalf of Brian and myself, we’re honored to serve the community as part of a Board committed to educational excellence for our students. Together, we can build a strong foundation rooted in transparency, accountability, and a shared vision for our schools. We’ve already reached out to the Board and district leadership to start building that partnership! We look forward to working with the continuing board members, including Danielle Bellomo, following her successful election last night.

We also look forward to working closely with our community and families, exploring new ways to foster positive, productive relationships with everyone who cares so deeply about our children’s future.

Lastly, Brian and I are saddened that Nirav won’t be joining us on this journey next year, but we’ll carry forward his commitment and vision in our work. We’re encouraged by his dedication to the success of all Marlboro students. Thank you, Nirav, for being such a driving force in the Partners Improving Education campaign.

SEL and DEI

The question from our community:

How do you feel about DEI and SEL?

For those who may see this topic from one perspective, we want to share some research we did to understand the history of SEL and DEI. These concepts are not new and didn’t just appear during COVID. In fact, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) has been around since the 1990s and has developed over time. SEL helps students learn important life skills like self-awareness, managing emotions, empathy, and effective communication. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) aim to create a school environment that values differences, treats all students fairly, and helps everyone feel they belong.

We aren’t experts in this area and are sharing our thoughtful opinion based on a rational approach, not emotional reactions. We haven’t seen data from the Marlboro Board of Education or school administration on the extent of this issue in our K-8 schools. We’ve heard concerns, but we don’t know if these concepts are part of any curriculum taught in Marlboro. If so, how is it incorporated? Without more information, it’s impossible to take a clear position on these items. Regardless, the question deserves an answer.

While SEL and DEI are important, we believe they should support, not replace, traditional academics. Core subjects like math, science, and literacy are still our main focus. Our goal is to encourage the administration to create a balanced educational experience that prepares students for a successful and fulfilling future.

We understand that topics like SEL and DEI can be sensitive, and we appreciate the concerns raised in conversations and on social media. Our primary goal is to ensure that all Marlboro students receive a quality education that prepares them for success. SEL can help students develop crucial life skills, like managing emotions and building positive relationships, which are essential for navigating life.

As for DEI, we believe it’s about ensuring every student, no matter their background, has the opportunity to succeed and feels safe and respected in our schools. It’s not about pushing any political agenda, but about creating an environment where all students can thrive.

We’ve said before and continue to say that we believe in transparency and open dialogue with parents, making sure everyone is informed and involved in what’s being taught. It’s important to respect the diverse perspectives in our community and work together to create a school environment that benefits all students.

Ultimately, we want what’s best for the kids in this town. We believe that equipping them with social and emotional skills, along with an understanding of respect and inclusion, will help them succeed in life. We’re committed to listening to and addressing concerns from all community members, including those with different viewpoints.

Our Commitment to the Marlboro Community:

  • Providing clear information about the goals and content of SEL and DEI programs in Marlboro schools.
  • Involving parents in decisions that impact their children’s education.
Welcoming ongoing feedback to refine our approach.
  • Maintaining transparent communication about these initiatives.

By balancing academic excellence with social and emotional development and fostering an inclusive environment, we aim to guide our district’s administration in providing an enriching educational experience that prepares students for a successful future. We value the support and partnership of our parents and community in achieving these goals together.
